Japanese Protesters March Against Sales Tax Increase

Three thousand angry Japanese tax payers gathered in Hibiya Park and marched in front of the Ministry of Finance and the Japanese Diet to protest the proposed sales tax increase from 5% to initially 8% and eventually 10%.

After the parliament passed new legislation for a new recovery tax after the disaster of last year’s March 11th earthquake and tsunami, the civilians started to question Prime Minister Noda’s (Democratic Party of Japan) promise during his campaign not to increase taxes. This proposal has incited many criticisms and opposition even within members of the Democratic Party.

Protesters took to the streets with signs opposing the increase in tax with messages that read, “The Democratic Party’s Policy is a Marxist Policy” and “Prime Minister Noda should resign immediately”.
